What is Protea?
Protea is an initiative born from the sympraxis between the CYENS’ Fairness and Ethics in AI – Human Interaction Group (fAIre MRG) and the Cyprus Center for Algorithmic Transparency (CyCAT) at the Open University of Cyprus. This internal project is running under the supervision of Dr. Jahna Otterbacher (Associate Professor at OUC, co-Leader at fAIre-CYENS) and Dr. Styliani Kleanthous (co-Leader at fAIre – CYENS).
Protea aims at
Implementing the right tools for inspiring citizens to get involved, educated and raise their awareness on matters of Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics (FATE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) using a Citizen Science approach.
Facilitating the public dialog on the FATE issues by creating a community of engaged citizens.
Enabling certification for learners on the FATE topic.
Providing support to policymakers to understand the public’s perception and acceptance of AI technologies.
Offering the right tools and methodologies for developers to test their ideas for AI technologies with the public.

Learn
The Protea eLearning Platform hosts specialized courses on topics around Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics in AI - Human Interaction. You can create an account and enroll in courses of your choice! Complete the necessary reading, perform practical exercises and quizzes and get a certificate. Signed certification is generated and you can download a PDF format of your certificate. Courses are free and publicly available. Become a part of the community, discuss with other learners and the instructors using the specialized forums of our courses. Protea is offered in English and Greek.
Engage
Be a part of an ongoing research project and engage with us. Contribute to gaining valuable knowledge and information on hot topics on Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Choose from a growing list of active research projects consisting of interactive studies and surveys to participate in. Protea will keep you up to date, by providing you the tools to enable the dissemination of the research results of the research studies you have contributed.

About Protea Certification
Protea courses have been developed by academics and researchers at the Open University of Cyprus and are running under the Protea platform. Certification is available through the Open University of Cyprus and the CYENS CoE. Certificates detail the teaching method used in the respective course, the instructor(s)’ names as well as the estimated workload.
